Gravitas Build to Construct New Warehouse Facility

It’s been a busy time for us here at Gravitas Build, with 2023 shaping up to be a great year. Our success has been bolstered further by recent news that we have been appointed as the principal contractor to construct a new warehouse facility. The 10,000 square feet facility, which will provide additional warehousing, is located between Kidderminster and Stourport.

The Project
The new warehouse facility will be of steel portal frame construction with an attached brick and block side extension, which will house the reception area, canteen, office, and toilet. The facility will provide just over 10,000 square feet of additional space for warehousing.

External access
Access for lorries is provided by two large doors at the front of the building, while a rear car park is accessed via a ramp to the side of the building. The car park will provide adequate parking for those using the facility and visitors. The building’s external finishes and landscaping will be sympathetic to the surroundings as it is located on a well-established industrial estate.

Innovative Techniques for Ground Retention in Warehouse Construction

As with any building project, there are several challenges to overcome during the construction process. With this project, the ground surrounding the warehouse site is considerably higher than the floor level of the building.
We are using two techniques to hold back the ground:

Sheet Piling

Sheet piling is a technique used in construction to create a retaining wall. The process involves driving interlocking steel sheets into the ground vertically. Sheet piles are installed sequentially, and each one is connected to the previous one employing interlocking systems, such as tongue and groove or clutch systems.
The sheet piles are usually driven into the ground until they reach a suitable depth, where they will provide sufficient support for the structure to be built on top.

Concrete pre-formed retaining wall.

Pre-formed concrete retaining wall sections are another type of retaining wall system used in construction. These sections are pre-cast concrete elements that are designed to interlock with each other, forming a continuous wall. The pre-cast sections are manufactured in various sizes and shapes. For this application, we are using a T-shape that will be placed on the ground upside down.
Pre-formed concrete retaining wall sections are popular in construction as they are quick, easy to install and provide excellent durability and long-term performance. They are commonly used for commercial and residential projects. They are particularly well-suited to sites with limited access or difficult soil conditions.

Foul Pipes and Drainage: Overcoming Challenges in Construction

Redirecting existing foul pipes is always a challenge. On this particular site, the pipes service the whole of the industrial estate, and it’s critical that downtime be kept to a minimum. However, the pipes are 4m deep, which poses a risk to the safety of the workers if the trench walls were to collapse. To address this risk, our team will use a steel shuttering system to hold back the trench walls once excavated.
The steel shuttering system is a temporary structure installed around the trench to support and prevent the walls from collapsing. The system consists of a series of steel panels bolted together to create a solid barrier around the trench. The panels are adjustable to suit the shape and size of the trench and are kept apart by hydraulic jacks that stop the walls from collapsing. They can be quickly and easily installed by our team.
The steel shuttering system is a common technique used in construction, particularly in situations where trenches are deep or unstable.

We are excited to be the principal contractor for this new warehouse facility. We’re confident in our team’s ability to overcome the challenges and deliver a high-quality facility for our clients. – Matt Sparkes, Site Manager at Gravitas Build.

With construction underway, we look forward to completing this project and providing our clients with the additional warehousing they need. The new facility’s design and external finishes will blend well with the established industrial estate. We are proud to be part of this project and look forward to its successful completion.
