Funeral Parlour Project
Based in Moseley, Birmingham, the Al-Abbas Islamic Centre had been planning to carry out extensive improvements to the site for some years. This included the building of a new Mosque and funeral parlour. We first got involved with the project back in 2018 when we were invited to tender for the building work.
We were delighted when in 2019 we got the good news that we’d been awarded the contract. The initial phase is to build the funeral parlour, with the main build of the Mosque following afterwards. This first stage will require us to construct the main structure of the building as well as the internal fit-out work on what will be a very prestigious project.

A design and build project, the funeral parlour is to provide additional facilities to the local Mosque based at the same site. A two-storey building with a footprint of approximately 208 square metres, the ground floor will serve as a funeral parlour, and the first floor, living accommodation for the site caretaker.
The design of the funeral parlour will offer the perfect balance between functionality and a supportive, friendly atmosphere for bereaved families and friends to visit.
Upstairs will be home for the full-time site caretaker. The apartment will provide adequate living space along with three spacious bedrooms.
We were delighted to have been appointed as the contractors for this project. At the time of writing, we’re a few months into the build and had to face a number of unanticipated challenges, one of which was the need to tank the building. With all of that behind us, it’s full steam ahead, and we’ll be in a position to get the roof on and be waterproof in just a few weeks” Ian Booth – Project Manager.
As a structure, it’s pretty straight forward, external brick wall with concrete block inner and traditional trussed roof. As a duel function building, certain additional elements have to be considered in the design. Noise reduction between what would be regarded as the commercial and domestic elements of the building, as well as additional fire prevention and exits for those living on the first floor.
However, with the external wall built from blue brick, this is a building that will stand out from those in the area. It really will set the bar high in terms of it’s design and finish; a project that we are very proud to be associated with.
